The Seven Common Threads of the Chummy Effect
We did not set out to find seven threads. There is nothing magical about the number.
But after decades of observation, we could no longer deny the pattern.

Whenever we examined a business, organization, product, experience, or individual that seemed to exude the Chummy Effect, we were astonished to find the same seven threads woven through it.
Some threads were more visible than others. Some appeared stronger in one place than another. But the threads themselves remained remarkably consistent.
Wherever the Chummy Effect is strong, there are seven common threads present:
GRATITUDE: People feel wanted.
DIGNITY: EveryONE matters.
EXCELLENCE: EveryTHING matters.
PRESENCE: People are truly seen.
AUTHENTICITY: It’s safe to be real.
GRACE: Grace outweighs ego.
LEGACY: The experience lives on.
To put it simply, the gravitational pull of the Chummy Effect is strongest when these seven threads are present and active.
Although each thread is distinct, together they move through three larger movements: GRATITUDE, GRACE, AND GIFT
Gratitude notices and values people.Threads 1–3
Grace creates the safety in which people can flourish.Threads 4–6
Gift carries the experience outward.Thread 7
These three movements give the threads a natural progression.
Gratitude changes the way we value people.
Grace changes the way people experience us.
Gift allows that experience to continue after the moment has ended.
The threads blend into one another, but they are not interchangeable. Each answers a different human question.
THREAD #1: GRATITUDE–When people feel wanted
The Chummy Effect begins wherever people sense that they are welcomed, valued, and desired—not merely tolerated, needed, or useful.
This thread begins and ends with gratitude.
THREAD #2: DIGNITY–When everyONE matters
People naturally return to places where every person is treated as someone of immeasurable worth, never as a transaction, interruption, or means to an end. Not everyone needs equal attention, but everyone deserves equal dignity.
THREAD #3: EXCELLENCE–When everyTHING matters
The smallest details quietly tell people how much they matter.
They say, “You were worth the effort,” because excellence is simply respect made visible.
And the most meaningful details do more than impress us. They connect an experience to a story, a memory, or something we value.
THREAD #4: PRESENCE–When people are truly seen
Listening, noticing, remembering, and being fully present tell people, “I see you,” in ways words alone never can.
Presence often begins with the simple but increasingly rare act of showing up and paying attention.
THREAD #5: AUTHENTICITY–When it’s safe to be real
When authenticity is welcomed instead of punished, people stop performing and begin belonging.
When we allow ourselves to be real, others become freer to be real too.
THREAD #6: GRACE–When grace outweighs ego
Trust grows where successes are shared generously, mistakes are owned humbly, and people matter more than appearances.
Grace makes room for human failure without using grace as an excuse to avoid responsibility.
THREAD #7: LEGACY–When the experience lives on
The strongest relationships do not end when people leave.
People leave carrying something—an idea, a memory, a story, a phrase, a practice, or a new way of seeing others—that draws them back and inspires them to create that same experience for someone else.
The best experiences want to go home with people. Legacy gives them something to carry.
It may be tempting to treat these seven threads as separate virtues to master. But they do not work in isolation. They are interconnected ways of seeing people, and each thread strengthens the others.
Woven together, they create the kind of experience that draws people toward a home, a company, a church, a school, a project, a product, or a person—and makes them want to return.
That is the Chummy Effect.
